In der Würzburger Kanzlei und Galerie Henneberger wird von Oktober bis Dezember 2014 “La fièvre jaune“ – „Das gelbe Fieber“ als Inbegriff der tiefen Sehnsucht nach der Ferne gezeigt. Eine Ausstellung mit Fotografien in Schwarzweiß aus Kambodscha und Burma von Enric Boixadós.

Ergänzt wird das Erlebnis der Bilder bei der Matinee mit einer Lesung aus den Reiseerzählungen von Sabine Ludwig Unterwegs am Mekong.

Angkor Vat, die perfekte Nachbildung des Universums, liegt versunken im Dschungel von Kambodscha. In Stein gehauene Gesichter mit erstarrtem, eiskaltem Lächeln blicken auf Jahrhunderte zurück, in denen sie unentdeckt blieben. Verloren im Urwald, dann der grausame Bürgerkrieg der Khmer Rouge mit Zerstörung und Tod. Diese Antlitze haben erlebt, was niemand mehr berichten kann oder zu erzählen wagt. Mit weit aufgerissenen Pupillen blicken sie ins Leere, irgendwohin in die unermesslichen Tiefen jenseits des menschlichen Daseins. Sie sind und bleiben stumm. Lautlos werden sie vom Dschungel überwuchert, der Würgegriff der mächtigen Wurzeln umklammert sie, hält sie fest, bereit für die Ewigkeit.

Ortswechsel Burma. Verfolgung, Unterdrückung, aber auch Hoffnung spiegeln sich in den Gesichtern der Menschen. In der Ferne ertönt die leise Melancholie burmesischer Befreiungslieder. Das ist sie: Die eigentümliche und tiefe Sehnsucht nach den fernen Ländern am Ende der Welt. “La fièvre jaune” – “Das gelbe Fieber”, nannten die Kolonialherren vor langer Zeit dieses Gefühl. War es die Gewissheit, das Andere niemals als Heimat betrachten zu können, oder war es schließlich die Erkrankung ihrer Seele, durch die sie die Widersprüchlichkeit mit all der berauschenden Exotik nie verstehen lernten. Ich habe keine Antwort darauf.

Enric Boixadós is a self-taught freelance photojournalist. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. He studied cultural anthropology and is a documentary, reportage and features photographer. He lived for several years in South East Asia and West Africa. His pictures have been published in international magazines. Further he has showcased some of his pieces in Germany and Spain and is a regular participant of Press Photo Awards. He is based in Randersacker/Germany and Barcelona/Spain.

Tattoos called Trash Polka

Realistic Trash Polka is a special Tattoo Style which is done by Simone Pfaff and Volker Merschky at her studio Buena Vista Tattoo Club in Wuerzburg, Germany. Here are some impressions from their exhibition at Fachhochschule Wuerzburg.

Ai Weiwei in Berlin

In spite of all the hostile oppression he has been facing in his own country, Ai Weiwei has decided to put on his largest one-man exhibition yet at Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau. Across 3,000 square metres, 18 rooms and in the spectacular Lichthof he displays works and installations that were either designed specifically for the Martin-Gropius-Bau or have not yet been shown in Germany. The name he has given to his exhibition is “Evidence”, a word that will be, a term well known beyond the English-speaking world from American crime series on TV to mean proof that will stand up in court. From his simple but spacious studio on the rural outskirts of Beijing, Ai Weiwei has created a deeply political exhibition for Berlin.

Very few of his works do not contain hidden allusions to internal Chinese affairs or to the subject of “China and the West” in general. One must learn to spot the ironical historical and political references in his works, which he sends out into the world like messages in bottles.

mgb14_p_ai_weiwei_08_zodiac_heads (Large)Among the works and installations on display at the Martin-Gropius-Bau are a golden copy of the zodiac sculptures (Golden Zodiac, 2011) cast in bronze (c. 1750) by Chinese craftsmen. In 1860, after the end of the Second Opium War, British and French soldiers had conquered Beijing in order to force China to take part in the opium trade. Some of these bronze zodiac figures found their way to Europe, and when they turned up in Paris in 2008 at an auction of Yves Saint-Laurent’s art collection they caused a sensation in the Chinese cultural sphere. Ai Weiwei does not accept the Chinese government’s stance, that these bronze figures are Chinese national treasures, declaring that, rather, they belong to the whole world.

mgb14_p_ai_weiwei_05_diaoyu_islands (Large)The infinite variety of forms offered by conceptual art allows him to express his ideas in a country where freedom of expression does not exist.He is also one of the most famous artists in China. In recent years, official Chinese propaganda has attempted to erase him from public consciousness. He is not allowed to exhibit in any museum in China.

Although he is allowed to work in his studio, a dozen surveillance cameras have been placed before his door. His ironic response was to hang red lanterns on them and reproduce them in marble (Marble Surveillance Cameras, 2010). The actions of the regime have been incorporated into his conceptual art. Although he is allowed to travel within China, every step he takes is monitored by undercover agents. His passport has been confiscated to prevent him from travelling abroad.

Around the world – a travel exhibition

image00101 (Large)“Around the World” in the Knauf museum in Iphofen, Franconia, Germany presents nearly 110 tourism posters from the collection of the German Historical Museum Berlin (DHM). Primarily from the 1920s and 1930s as well as from the 1950s and the early 1960s. Posters from shipping companies, airlines and railways, from tour operators and tourist agencies are evidence of the economic importance of tourism and touristic promotion for societies in the 20th century.

07 (Large)Within the many fields of application for poster art, tourism posters make up a class
of their own, to the service of which many notable commercial artists have devoted
their work. “Around the World” invites you on an imaginary journey across continents,
countries and cities and at the same time through a brief segment of poster history.
In addition, travel guides, tourist souvenirs, photos from aboard German cruise
ships and from airlines, entirely from the collections of the DHM, give an impression
of the world of travel.

Quotations serve as an echo of travel experiences and impressions of country and
people and comment on the allure of the posters.

09 (Large)The poster collection of the German Historical Museum Berlin comprises the stocks of the former Museum für Deutsche Geschichte and the German Historical Museum that came together in the course of reunification.

11 (Large)It contains around 75.000 posters, ranging from the early period of postermaking
at the end of the 19th century, through the First World War, the Weimar Republic
and the time of the “Third Reich”, on up to the German Democratic Republic and
the Federal Republic of Germany. The principal focus of the collection is the political poster, but in addition there is a great deal of material from the areas of commerce and culture, including some 1.700 tourism posters.

08 (Large)A large portion of these tourism posters acquired by the former “Museum für Deutsche Geschichte” came from private collections: the Bernhard Koslowski Collection and the Arthur Wolf Collection. Later acquisitions, including those of the DHM, supplement these stocks. “Around the World” shows a representative selection of the tourism posters.

02 (Large)Strength through Joy

Immediately after the crushing of the trade unions at the beginning of May 1933,
the “Deutsche Arbeitsfront” – “German Labour Front” (DAF) – was founded as the
single unified organisation of “all working Germans”. This “pseudo trade union”
was the body responsible for the National Socialist leisure-time and travel organisation
“Kraft durch Freude” – “Strength through Joy” (KdF) – that was launched in
November 1933.

06 (Large)According to Robert Ley, head of the DAF, the privilege of the upper classes to travel
should be broached as an “act of socialism”, and workers should be sent on holiday
with inexpensive package trips offered by the KdF.
In 1934 the KdF was already able to sell around half a million holiday trips, and by
the outbreak of the war in 1939 the number had risen to 37 million. The majority
of these trips were short inland excursions and hiking tours, which workers could
afford. However, the share of workers participating in the prestigious cruises with
ships of the KdF fleet to Madeira, the Italian coastal areas and Norway was less
than one-fifth.

Angel exhibition in Marktbreit, Germany

Angel motives of old christmas cards from 1900 to 1930 are exhibited in the Museum Malerwinkelhaus Marktbreit, Germany, til Christmas 2013.

The history of the Christmas card started 1843 in London when Sir Henry Cole asked the illustrator John Callcott Horsley to create a card with the inscription „Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You“. Horsley got inspired by a Church altar picture and painted the motive  of a family meeting. Sir Cole had his own printing company and therefore he started with a first edition of 1.000 cards. He sold them very expensive. Since the first stamp was created in 1840 the mailing of Christmas cards got very popular.
